New space for innovation: Interzero Plastics Innovations celebrates moving into new modern laboratory and office space
Innovation needs space – not just freedom of thought to be able to think of new things and ask the right questions, but also in practice. With the new laboratory and office space in Lenart, Slovenia, the Interzero Plastics Innovations competence center is creating optimal conditions to further expand its leading role in the field of circular economy. This step is a significant milestone on the way to realizing the vision of a world without waste. High-ranking guests from politics, business and the press attended the ceremonial opening of the new location. Among them were the Chairman and shareholder of Interzero, Dr. Axel Schweitzer , the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar , and the German Ambassador Sylvia Groneick , both of whom emphasized the importance of Interzero’s innovation work for a sustainable future. “We must really internalize the sustainable use of goods and packaging, in other words, move from a linear to a circular economy,” said Dr. Axel Schweitzer in his opening speech. “In order to be able to keep more materials in circulation, the recyclability of packaging must be considered from the outset. We need innovative solutions for the materials and products that are not yet circular today.” Dr. Nataša Pirc Musar, President of the Republic of Slovenia and keynote speaker at the event, also emphasized in her speech the inevitability of the switch to circular and sustainable use of plastics as well as efficient reuse and recycling. “In order to achieve truly significant results, the problem must be addressed holistically across the entire life cycle of plastic products and materials and across national borders.” To this end, she will continue to count on the knowledge and innovative solutions of the competence center, the President continued. The services of the internationally accredited laboratory are specifically geared to the needs of the economy. In addition to research and development, the focus of the laboratory is on developing solutions that help companies manufacture new products from high-quality recyclates . The competence center’s activities also include advice on cost and energy optimization in production and on processing plastics from various raw material sources . “Through evaluation and analysis, we supply our customers with high-quality recycled plastics tailored to their needs that have comparable or even better technical properties than primary raw materials and thus represent a sustainable alternative,” says Dr. Manica Ulčnik-Krump, head of the facility. The possible applications for these materials are extremely diverse – from household, sports and leisure products to packaging and designer furniture. With the opening of the new premises, Interzero is once again underlining its claim to drive the transition to a circular economy through pioneering technologies and sustainable solutions .

Interzero delays Earth Overshoot Day - sustainable circular solutions show results
On August 1, all of the earth’s natural resources available to humans for the year 2024 will be used up – according to calculations by the Global Footprint Network (GFN). Without Interzero’s recycling activities and innovative circular solutions, this critical point would have been exceeded even earlier: GFN’s survey shows that Interzero, together with its approximately 50,000 customers , has managed to postpone the Earth Overshoot by 7:12 minutes . The circular economy service provider is thus once again demonstrating the positive influence of its service portfolio.
“Together with our customers, we want to generate real impact. With the vision of a world without waste , in which the available resources are used sustainably and responsibly, firmly in sight, we are always looking for new ways to push back Earth Overshoot Day. With measurable success “, says Dr. Axel Schweitzer, Chairman and shareholder of Interzero . In order to postpone Earth Overshoot Day further, it is necessary for both companies and consumers to take responsibility for the sustainable handling of goods and packaging along the entire value chain. Starting with product design – in terms of durability, repairability and recyclability – through to reuse and recycling.
“Under the motto “Move the Date”, we have succeeded in delaying Earth Overshoot Day 2024 by 7:12 minutes through consistent action together with our customers. This motivates us to continue to keep recyclable materials of all kinds in circulation through innovative environmental solutions.” , says Thomas Glatz, Managing Director at Interzero Austria . ” Thanks to the latest sorting technologies, we are able to achieve even higher recycling rates in order to further conserve the already limited primary resources .” Interzero works together with its customers to conserve natural resources. For example, the outdoor brand VAUDÉ was able to use Interzero’s expertise to develop the first bicycle bag made entirely from recycled plastic packaging waste. Interzero’s packaging experts are working with ALDI on the continuous optimization of its own-brand packaging , and the energy supplier EnBW is also relying on the know-how of our colleagues in Germany when it comes to IT refurbishment. Reliable ESG data: Interzero supports companies in complying with the CSRD
Many SMEs are already being inundated with requests to provide data on ESG factors along their supply chains as well as key figures for their own company. But how do companies that have few resources and no time for this get reliable and robust figures? The requests for these figures and data are based on the one hand on the CSRD, which will be relevant for significantly more companies from 2025, and on the other hand on the new Supply Chain Act , which demands more transparency. However, there are numerous overlaps between the requirements for the CSRD and the Supply Chain Act – so if you set up the collection of these figures once, you are killing two birds with one stone. The Environmental Sustainability Dashboard (ESD) from Interzero is a modern solution for recording exactly the environmental key figures that are relevant for the CSRD and the Supply Chain Act. This also applies to the figures for Scope 3 – i.e. everything that occurs before value is added in your own company by suppliers and afterwards through transport, use and disposal of the products . The ESD meets the international standards GRI, GHG and CED. At the same time , the company retains control over its data . In order to collect the right key figures, Interzero’s support begins with the analysis of double materiality : What impact does the company’s activities have on the environment and society? How do external factors such as global warming affect the company? Based on this, relevant ESG aspects are identified and finally a strategy is developed to improve environmental performance, collect all the necessary figures and use them to create CSRD-compliant reports . There are already voluntary standards for ESG reporting for SMEs. On the one hand, this is the ideal preparation for the mandatory reporting that will soon be necessary. On the other hand, it promotes innovation in the company, makes it fit for the future and improves its competitiveness .

Success story: Reducing the ecological footprint of Floorball World Championship qualifications
Floorball World Championship Qualifications (WFCQ)
Introduction: In recent years, the global discussion on sustainability has grown in intensity, prompting organizations worldwide to assess their environmental footprint. At the forefront of this movement, our team conducted a comprehensive analysis of the environmental impact of the Men’s Floorball World Championship Qualifiers (WFCQ). Using the Environmental Sustainability Dashboard (ESD) developed by Interzero, we set out to assess and minimize the carbon footprint of this major sporting event. Context: The WFCQ took place from January 31 to February 4, 2024 in Škofja Loka, Slovenia. Five teams from Slovenia, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy and Denmark participated, as well as representatives of the International Floorball Federation (IFF). A total of 216 athletes and staff, as well as 2,453 visitors, 33 volunteers and local workers were involved.
Challenge: The venue's carbon footprint
The challenge was clear: how could we ensure that the Men’s WFCQ, despite its exciting sporting nature, also met our sustainability requirements? With various dimensions to consider, including venue operations, transport logistics, communication activities, exhibition preparations, accommodation and catering services, the task was daunting. With a dedicated team and our Environmental Sustainability Dashboard, we took on the challenge.
The following categories were taken into account to calculate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the venue at the Poden Arena in Škofja Loka (Slovenia):
- Stationary fuel combustion
- total power consumption
- consumption of district heating/cooling
- water consumption
- waste disposal
Solution: Our methodology was based on the principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to ensure that every aspect of the event was assessed for its environmental impact. From quantifying greenhouse gas emissions to assessing waste and transportation, nothing was overlooked. By using the Environmental Sustainability Dashboard, we were able to collect and analyze data from various sources, adhering to internationally recognized standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).
Result: The results of our analysis were both insightful and actionable. With a total carbon footprint of 108.1 tons CO2 equivalent, we gained valuable insight into the areas where our efforts could make the biggest difference. Transportation was the most significant factor, accounting for 52% of the event’s carbon footprint, mainly due to air travel. Accommodation and food also contributed significantly to overall emissions. These findings did not stop the assessment. Instead, we proposed targeted strategies to reduce environmental impact. From promoting sustainable travel options for participants to optimizing the venue’s energy consumption and minimizing waste generation, every mitigation measure was guided by our commitment to sustainability. By the end of the Men’s WFCQ, we had not only achieved our goal of quantifying the event’s environmental impact, but also demonstrated our unwavering commitment to sustainability. Through collaborative efforts and innovative solutions, we transformed a sporting event into a model of environmental responsibility and set new standards for future championships around the world. Conclusion: The success of our sustainability initiative for the Men’s Floorball World Championship Qualifiers (WFCQ) is a testament to the effectiveness of data-driven decision-making and collective action. Looking ahead, we remain true to our commitment to sustainability and ensure that future generations can enjoy the thrill of sport without compromising the health of our planet.
What is the Environmental Sustainability Dashboard?
The Environmental Sustainability Dashboard (ESD) is Interzero’s solution that supports its clients in integrating sustainability into their business strategy through key consulting services. The ESD includes several steps, starting with context analysis and ending with the creation of a sustainability action plan. A key element is the ESD tool, an online platform that helps companies calculate various environmental, social and governance impacts of their core activities and/or products. The impacts are assessed in different dimensions such as emissions, energy, materials, water and waste. A wide range of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) can be calculated, such as GHG emissions or material consumption. For each dimension, specific data is required to calculate the relevant results. Both input and output data are selected and generated based on common standards, such as the Global Reporting Initiative, and referenced literature. The result information can be used not only for communication purposes but also for technical assessments and integrated into the corporate sustainability report. The ESD is available to companies of all sizes, regardless of whether they offer services or products.

Best practice examples from the business world show effective solutions
Interzero works together with its customers to protect natural resources. The outdoor brand VAUDE has developed the first bike bag made entirely from recycled plastic packaging waste. The recycled plastic used comes from Interzero. Interzero’s packaging experts are working with ALDI on the continuous optimization of its own-brand packaging, and the energy supplier EnBW relies on the circular economy service provider’s expertise when it comes to IT refurbishment. For calculation:
For the calculations, the Global Footprint Network uses a resource accounting system: the “ecological footprint”. Using this indicator, the non-profit organization compares the current needs of the world population (or countries) with the earth’s ability to renew the natural resources it uses. Valid basic data for Interzero’s contribution to the relief effort is provided, among other things, by the study “resources SAVED by Recycling” by the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT. On behalf of Interzero, the scientists determine annually how many greenhouse gases and resources are saved by recycling recyclable materials.

Extended Producer Responsibility from 2025: New Requirements for EU Companies
The final EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), to be adopted in 2024 and to enter into force in 2025, aims to minimise the environmental impact of packaging . It will focus on promoting recyclability and sustainability and introducing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). This could result in significant changes to the requirements for producers across the European market .
New obligations for manufacturers
(Expected obligations according to the current version of the Directive)
Extended producer responsibility can oblige manufacturers and distributors of packaging to bear the costs for the entire life cycle of their packaging. They are therefore also responsible for taking back and recycling. This includes:
- design and production of recyclable packaging
- collection and transport to recycling and disposal facilities
- sorting and (re)use
- Disposal of non-recyclable packaging
In addition, companies must register with the relevant national authorities and report the quantities of packaging placed on the market.
Directive possible from 2025, obligation starts 18 months
The PPWR is due to come into force in 2025 and may lead to the mandatory appointment of an authorised representative in each EU member state. Every company that exports to different EU countries and does not have its own headquarters in the respective country would then have to appoint a local authorised representative . This representative would assume the company’s obligations, including registration and reporting obligations to the national authorities. This regulation is currently still being discussed.
National Authorized Representatives throughout the EU
While the authorised representative model is already known in Austria and Spain, this obligation is expected to apply in all EU countries once the PPWR comes into force. Any company that sells goods to certain EU countries and is not based in the respective country needs a local authorised representative.
International challenges and support from Interzero
Internationally operating companies face major organizational and financial challenges, as there are obligations and requirements in every country that must be met. This is where Interzero comes in: By redistributing responsibilities, companies should be more conscious of their packaging design. The goal is to extend the shelf life of packaging . Many companies cannot map the resources internally to improve sustainable packaging design or seek support from external expertise. With the modular “Made4Circle” solution, Interzero offers companies of all sizes support in developing sustainable and recyclable packaging. Our digital portals and solutions make it easier to comply with EPR obligations and reduce administrative effort.
Act now
With the right preparation and support from experienced partners such as Interzero as a Europe-wide environmental service provider, all of these challenges can be mastered. Companies should therefore address the issue in a timely manner, as the implementation is extensive. Contact us: For compliance with Austrian law, rely on Interzero Austria.
