List of wastes in accordance with the Austrian Waste List Regulation
Waste Catalog in Austria – Classification and Waste Codes According to EDM
The provisions of the Waste Management Act 2002 (AWG 2002) and the associated Waste Catalog Regulation 2020 require many businesses in Austria to maintain waste records that are accurate in terms of both quality and quantity. To properly fulfill this obligation, it is necessary to be familiar with the types of waste and their corresponding code numbers, which are listed in the Austrian Waste Catalog.
Businesses use the waste inventory for the following purposes, among others:
- maintaining waste records in the EDM (Electronic Data Management) system,
- the transfer of waste to recipients and recycling facilities,
- the preparation of the required environmental reports,
- the classification of waste as hazardous or non-hazardous.
The Waste Catalog is an indispensable resource for any business owner who generates waste in Austria
Under current regulations, businesses are required to dispose of the industrial or production waste generated in the course of their business operations. The wide variety of these waste types poses a major challenge for those responsible for waste management—it is crucial to assign the correct waste codes, which enable proper recording, disposal, or recycling.
Below, we present the current waste catalog, which is organized into groups and subgroups.

Waste Catalog – Frequently Asked Questions
The Austrian Waste Catalog is based on the
- Waste Classification Regulation 2020,
- is operated in the EDM system,
- uses national waste codes (key codes) linked to the EU system.
It is an indispensable tool for every business owner operating in Austria and enables the proper recording, classification, and disposal of waste in accordance with legal requirements.
The Austrian system is harmonized with the European Waste Catalogue (EWC / LoW) and implements EU regulations on the classification of waste, including its hazardous properties.
In practice, this means:
- The national waste codes (ÖNORM S2100) are linked to the European system,
- For cross-border shipments of waste, the EU designations are also used,
- The classification of waste is based on common criteria that apply throughout the European Union.

Waste Catalog – Waste Classification and Codes in Accordance with BDO
The provisions of the Waste Act of December 14, 2012, require many businesses to maintain records of waste by type and quantity. To fulfill this obligation, you must be familiar with the waste codes listed in the waste catalog. You will also use the waste catalog when scheduling waste pickups and when issuing KPO documents in BDO.
The Waste Catalog is a must-have for every business that generates waste
In accordance with applicable regulations, businesses are required to manage industrial or manufacturing waste generated as a result of their operations. The wide variety of these waste types poses a significant challenge for waste management professionals—it is crucial to assign the appropriate waste codes to each type of waste to ensure its proper recording, disposal, or recovery.
Below is the current waste catalog, organized by groups and subgroups, with hazardous wastes identified.

1) The first two digits indicate the waste group, which identifies the source of the waste. The waste group code, together with the next two digits, identifies the waste subgroup, and the six-digit code identifies the type of waste.
(1) Hazardous components in electrical and electronic equipment include rechargeable and non-rechargeable batteries listed under 16 06 and labeled as hazardous, mercury switches, glass from cathode-ray tubes and other active glass, etc.
(2) Transition metals include: scandium, vanadium, manganese, cobalt, copper, yttrium, niobium, hafnium, tungsten, titanium, chromium, iron, nickel, zinc, zirconium, molybdenum, and tantalum. These metals or their compounds are hazardous if they are classified as hazardous substances. The classification of hazardous substances is specified in separate regulations.
(3) Stabilization processes alter the hazardous properties of waste components, thereby transforming hazardous waste into non-hazardous waste. Solidification processes alter only the physical state of the waste through the use of additives (e.g., converting liquid waste into solid waste) without changing the chemical properties of the waste.
(4) Partially stabilized waste is waste that, following the stabilization process, contains hazardous components that have not been completely transformed into non-hazardous components and that could be released into the environment in the short, medium, or long term.
Waste Catalog – Frequently Asked Questions
The waste catalog makes it easier to assign waste generated by a company to specific groups, subgroups, and types. Proper waste classification is crucial for maintaining waste records and also allows for monitoring the quantity and type of waste generated by the company.
Waste codes are also frequently used when scheduling waste collection and planning a company’s overall waste management logistics. They indicate how a particular type of waste should be managed, making them valuable information for waste collection companies. Some types of waste can be recycled and reused; others (such as hazardous waste), however, must be processed and disposed of in a strictly defined manner.
The waste catalog and classification are set forth in the Regulation of the Minister of Climate dated January 2, 2020, on the waste catalog. You can find the full text of the regulation and its annexes HERE.
We classify all waste in the catalog based on:
- the source of their origin,
- properties that classify waste as hazardous waste. These properties are specified in Annex 3 to the Act of December 14, 2012, on Waste,
- components of waste for which exceeding the concentration limits for hazardous substances may result in the waste being classified as hazardous waste.
The waste catalog was established by law—specifically, the regulation on the waste catalog—and therefore remains in effect as long as the provisions implementing it remain in force.
At Interzero , we monitor the entire legislative process and amendments to laws governing environmental issues. As a result , the waste classification you’ll find on our website is always up to date and can serve as a source of waste codes for maintaining your ongoing waste records.
The hazardous waste catalog is an integral part of the above waste catalog. All hazardous wastes are marked in the catalog with an asterisk next to the waste code.
The waste catalog consists of groups (identified by 2-digit codes), subgroups (identified by 4-digit codes), and waste types (identified by 6-digit waste codes).
To properly classify a given waste:
- Identify the source of the waste so that it can be assigned to a specific category.
- Find a waste subcategory.
- Select a specific type of waste.
If you cannot find the appropriate waste type in groups 01 through 12 or 17 through 20, you should classify it in groups 13 through 15. If the code for the waste in question is not listed in groups 13 through 15 either, it should be classified in group 16.
When maintaining waste records, you must use 6-digit waste codes.
