Waste management officer according to §11 AWG Austria - external appointment, consulting & implementation
We provide your waste management officer in accordance with §11 AWG – legally compliant, practical and location-based.
For companies throughout Austria – as external waste management officers.
Companies are faced with increasingly complex waste regulations – from the Waste Management Act (Waste Management Act) to disposal certificates and documentation. At the same time, the demands for environmentally friendly and efficient waste management are increasing. Interzero assumes the statutory obligation of a waste management officer (Section 11 of the Waste Management Act) for you!
What is a waste manager according to §11 AWG?

The waste officer is a competent person who supports companies in complying with waste legislation.
He or she monitors proper waste management in the company, advises the management and actively contributes to improving waste separation, prevention and disposal.
Good to know:
A waste officer is not just a legal obligation – he or she creates transparency, reduces risks during inspections by the authorities and helps to reduce costs and liability risks.
Who needs a waste manager in Austria?
Obligation according to AWG §11:
A waste manager must be appointed if
- a company in Austria has 100 or more employees
- hazardous waste is regularly generated in a company, or
- the type, quantity or treatment of the waste requires this for environmental or safety reasons.
The obligation applies regardless of location and is based on the total number of employees in the company.
Typical companies with a duty to appoint a waste manager:
- Industrial and production companies
- Hotel & catering company with several locations
- Company with many branches
- Office operations including field service
- Companies with hazardous waste (e.g. oils, solvents, chemicals)

Practical tip:
Even if there is no formal obligation, a waste officer can be useful – for example, to relieve internal resources or to prepare professionally for inspections.
Tasks and duties of a waste manager
Obligation according to AWG §11:
The waste officer acts as the central technical contact person for all waste-related issues in the company.
The main tasks include:
- Monitoring compliance with the AWG and relevant ordinances
- Monitoring the proper collection, separation and storage of waste
- Advising the management and the responsible departments
- Participation in the creation, updating and implementation of the waste management concept (AWK)
- Training and sensitization of employees
- Preparation and monitoring of inspections by the authorities

Important: Responsibility and liability remain with the company – the waste management officer provides technical and organizational support.
